Certain categories of photographs seem to repeat themselves over and over again, and consequently i.e. photographic competitions are divided into categories like “exotic travel”, “street photography”, “fashion”, “black/white nude” etc.
Nevertheless, both photographers, as well as juries, apparently assume they see the specific photograph for the very first time because the competition calls don’t specify details of these images other than the categories or ask for copies or variations of given images;
at the same time compared with each other, there exist large series of visually almost identically structured lens-based images; interestingly these are often award-winning images in their respective photo competition categories, as opposed to the more unusual and original images and very much opposed to what is requires in other media, i.e. painting, to be celebrated as groundbreaking artwork.
This leads to the conclusion that the objective in this format of visual communication is not the creation of new and never-seen-before art but instead recognition, aided by the repetition of specific visual codes that through mirroring over time developed a language that can be used to express the belonging to a specific social group.
