Sophia, as it turns out is not a “Sophia” at all, and turns out to be “Lizzie” (“Elizabeth“). Puppets in the making at some point tend to take on their own identity, if it doesn’t match with something I had in mind starting out I don’t interfere; this sounds quite esoteric, but it isn’t for that reason, it is more letting go of conscious controlling where the work is developing and interacting with accidents. It would be the same with a painting (*only when throwing pots on the wheel this approach leads to disaster!), but however one wants to describe it, in my experience that makes a more lively puppet, and that is the goal. One could also say: being less anal makes better art.
